Chinese traditional arts influence on my design

 There are various types of traditional Chinese artistic works that fully manifest the understanding and pursuit of beauty of the Chinese nation. Meanwhile, the Chinese national culture is rich and varied. But Chinese calligraphy, seal Cutting and painting are important influence on my design.

Introduction

  A .Calligraphy 

  Calligraphy is a traditional art of writing Chinese characters. After centuries of creation and evolvement, handwriting has become a unique art.

  The usual styles of calligraphy include seal, official, regular, cursive and running scrips. The seal script was the representative script of the Qin Dynasty(221-206BC).

The official script was popularly used in the Han Dynasty(206BC-220AD). The regular script was the result of development of the official script. The cursive script is a fast way of writing the regular and official scripts. The running script is something between the regular and official scripts. The running script is something between the regular and cursive scripts. Not as neat as the former and not as difficult to recognize as the latter, it is the most commonly uesd, and is the easiest way of handwriting. There have been many famous calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi, Ouyang Xun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan and Zhao Mengfu,to name but a few. Each, after years of hard practice, had formed a unique calligraphic style and school to raise the profile of the art.

Tools used for calligraphy are called"four Treasures in the study". Namely, Chinese brush, ink stick, paper and ink stone. To learn calligraphy, one first has to learn how to use a Chinese brush. Beginners should start by copying the regular script.

B. Seal Cutting

Seal cutting refers to carving with a knife on a block of some substance according to a diagram or calligraphy painted on it.A unique form of traditional art in China, it is of both practical and appreciative functions.

A block thus carved is called a seal. Characters can be carved in relief or cut deep into the piece of stone or wood, which is called intaglio. On the left side, characters indicating name of the carver and the date of the carving are engraved, mostly in intaglio.

At the beginning, a seal was only used as a token of pledge or a symbol of power. It was not until the tang Dynasty(618-907AD) that the seal was used not only practically but also treated as an art. It turned into an art form in the Song(960-1279AD) and Yuan(1271-1368AD) dynasties and flourished in the late Ming Dynasty(1368-1644AD) and early Qing Dynasty(1644-1911AD). In the period, many carving artists and schools appeared. 

The font usually adopted in a chop is the seal script. Besides, regular, official, running scripts are also used. The block for carving can be made of crystal, jade, metal, beast horn, ivory, bamboo, wood,stone, etc. Stone is most extensively used, among which, Qingtian, changhua, Shoushan and Balin seal stones are the most valuable.

Seal cutting is a combination of calligraphy, painting and carving.   

C．traditional Chinese painting

  traditional Chinese painting refers to the execution of a picture on a piece of Xuan paper or silk with a Chinese brush that has absorbed black ink or colored pigments. It is regarded as one of the three quintessence of Chinese culture together with traditional Chinese medicine and Beijing opera.

  If divided by content, traditional chinese painting can be classified into three categories, namely, figurine, landscape and flower and bird.

  

  Painting of figurines matured as early as the Warring States Period(475-221BC) and reached its peak during the Tang Dynasty(618-907AD). 

  Painting of landscape first appeared in the Qin Dynasty(221-206BC) and became an independent category of painting during the Sui(581-618AD) and Tang Dynasty. By the time of the SongDynasty(960-1279AD), it had reached a very high level. 

  Painting of flowers and birds focus also includes beasts, fish, insects, etc. It came into being in the northern and southern dynasties(420-589AD) and became a mature art during the Song Dynasty. 

  If divided by styles of brushwork, traditional Chinese painting can be categorized into gongbi, realistic painting characterized by fine brushwork and close attention to details, and xieyi, freehand brushwork aimed at catching the spirit of the object and expressing the author's impression or mood. In the latter, brushstrokes may be brief and simple, but they are powerful in expression.

  In traditional Chinese painting, apart from picture, there are also inscriptions, poems and seals. Therefore, traditional Chinese painting is an art form combining poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals.

  

  I was teaching the basic work in graphic designhas for several years. Here I wanted to share some of my ideas.

  Art is the ladder of the progress of mankind, it also is the paradise of the human spirit. Art has led me ten years of growth path. In my intense studys and works, I participate in some artistic activities. It is useful for my life. Passing art activities, I get good exercises.

  I graduated from Harbin normal university department of Chinese painting art major. After graduation I fulfilled a wish to enter a college. But unfortunately I was assigned to art design staff room, I was engaged in the plane design basis of teaching. The content of study is not consistent. Lead to later the teaching way, I walked is not easy.

  One day, reading the newspaper I knew an outstanding art educators--Yang You xin  had pass away. Originally only as a news read, I have never thought it incredibly has a contact with me. Our school's president and Mr. Yang had a deep relationship. Keep the old man's many artworks. In order to miss the old man, also carry forward in one hundred spirit of normal development, promoting the campus culture , improve all the teachers and students culture and art accomplishment. Our school decided to publish "memorial art educators Yang You xin Chinese paintings anthology" . Thanks Mr Yang dedicated himself to the education career. As a successful and influence of art educator, painter, the old man was in the forty years fostering a large art talents for the fine arts education. The development of the cause of made an important contribution. So I was lucky to participate in the anthology design.

Design concept

  To collect and arrangement the material we found Mr Yang's works, mainly painted animals and plants. Seemingly random writing, but adornment appearing natural. Optional contains a rigorous, the rhythm of the life is opportunely. Whether layout, with ink, colouring or seal, it is showing the vitality. According to the characteristics of the traditional Chinese painting, we decided to the style of the works are consistent.

  First, the cover used Mr Yang's painting "Shuang Xi". Given priority to, the background tonal used gray moves in it. Application of typical Chinese ink, wipe and dye characteristics. The whole apply to give a restore ancient ways, we feeling it. 

  Second, collocation of the traditional Chinese calligraphy font and typical Chinese elements- Ruyi and Auspicious cloud, carry bright whole picture visual effect. Finally back cover also used a famous Chinese painting to give priority to. With cover corresponding. In order not to the leading role, especially the back cover painting dim the color of the ink, and use the ink circle to highlight characteristics.

 Inside pages also used Mr Yang's artworks, because the characteristics of Chinese painting is combined with ink and water, not strong or light. So in order to highlight his artworks, we with different forms of ink to foil. The main background are used white. Earlier we used black ink, made after the effect that appear too inanimate, and then adjust into shallow. And we used black contrast color red to make the inside pages borders, and at the same time, it also marks of the painting seal consistent.

  A total of 44 pages picture book in here, not only description one by one, with a few pages of the representative to explain.

  I thought it is traditional design works. Most of the time I often commercial purposes of the design more. This is the memory of a deceased painter, for publishing, so the design documents to need to use a CMYK format, resolution 300 dpi, but also to make 3 mm border.  It is use 200 grams of glossy paper, such colour effect is good.

  In general, the simple is beautiful, contracted and not simple, use the method of chinese paintings like white fill in the picture. To design inside pages, use the ink to form the format design. This design is a point on feeling it. And also for the future lay the good teaching practice base.
